Ice Pond #1 is part of the Ice Pond Series of sculptural paintings loosely inspired by many visits to this nature conservation area in Brewster, New York late 2023 and into 2024.

Each painting triggered different memories of my experiences hiking the trails.

• I hiked up to the lookout for the eclipse. Was mid-day and early April in New York, so the temperature was probably in the mid 50's to 60's. The only other visitors were a family with the parents a few kids and a Grandmother. They were enjoying the view from the lookout, which is a nice gently sloping rock face, and I greeted them and passed their spot a bit, but ended up sitting well within ear-shot. The two young, elementary aged boys came over towards me to offer me an extra pair of disposable viewing glasses for the eclipse. Of course, I didn't handle this interaction in the best way because I said, "thank you, but I'm okay". I immediately felt terrible because one of the boys said, "aww", in a distinctly disappointing tone that had me questioning my humanity the rest of my time sitting there alone in silence. I watched as the eclipse came and went, beautiful by the way, and then decided I needed to salvage what I could from my mishandling the opportunity to accept a kind offering from a young child. So, as I got up and passed the family on my way back to my car, I made sure to stop and tell them that it was such a kind offer, and I used more words to try and convince these kids that being kind is good... Not one of my best moments, but at least I have a nice memory .
